PM BINDERS - Notice to all customers
You will note that there is no order form, or substantial advertising, for PM Binders in this month’s magazine. This is because of the huge backlog of orders that we have in hand. We are exploring steps to tackle the backlog at a faster rate than we have been able to achieve of late, and once we bring the waiting time back to reasonable proportions, we will once again invite orders.
In the meantime, we apologise to all those who have been waiting for an increasingly lengthy period for their binders, and assure them that we are doing our utmost to hasten their orders to completion. We thank them for their patience. They will hear from us, by post, when their binders have been made.
We have continued to advertise the range of FA Cup Final Binders (on page A20), as the manufacturing process of these is much quicker than bespoke, tailor-made binders.
We have a number of binders IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE for sale. These are ones which on which we have made a mistake, usually in the embossed lettering on the spine. We have covered these words with a plastic pocket, into which is inserted a piece of blue cardboard, on which collectors can write their own inscription, thus describing the programmes contained within.
The majority of these binders contain 15 sleeves, which will house 30 programmes of pre 1980 vintage. There are a handful of binders which contain a few more sleeves.
These are available in three sizes : (A) suitable for A5 sized programmes ; (D) suitable for B5 sized programmes and smaller ; and (A4) suitable for A4 sized programmes (modern cup finals and internationals) and smaller.
The first two (A) and (D) are for sale at £8 ; the larger, A4 size, at £10. Postage is extra, or we can bring them along to a programme fair for free collection. If you wish the items to be posted to you, there are vast savings in carriage costs for larger orders - for indicative postage prices please see the advert on page A20.
To discuss these IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE binders, please call 01603 449237 or email progm@hotmail.com, and advise your requirements (cloth colour and sizes in particular), or write for a quote to PM BINDERS, PO BOX 3236, NORWICH, NR7 7BE

A RECORD OF PRE-WAR SCOTTISH LEAGUE PLAYERS
Shortly after the publication of the first version of “A Record of Post-War Scottish League Players”, the CD Rom with comprehensive records of appearances, goals, signing dates, dates of birth etc. of all players to have played for Scottish League clubs from 1946/47 to date, Forrest Robertson emailed me to ask if I had any plans for a pre-war version. “Not this side of retirement” was the reply. I haven’t retired, but I have been working on the pre-war equivalent, despite my earlier protestations. What kicked off this latest project was the same motivation as the post-war project ; frustration at the inaccuracies of published career statistics, many of them lazily perpetuated down through a sequence of “cut-and-paste” books. The precise inspiration for the pre-war research was an enquiry about the career of R.C. Hamilton, the Rangers and Scotland striker of the early years of the 20th century. First call, as always, was to Douglas Lamming’s superb “Scottish Soccer Internationalists’ Who’s Who”, which led to cross-referencing to club-specific history books. Due to the dismal state of Scottish football statistics from that period, Lamming got his order of clubs mixed up, once Hamilton had left Rangers. An understandable error, and a cycle of misinformation that could only be broken by building a database from original sources. Two years have been spent keying-in the registration books of the Scottish Football League and Scottish Football Association, thanks to the kindness and forebearance of officials at the League and the Scottish Football Museum at Hampden Park. This huge collection of statistics - 65,500 entries/lines - now has to be tidied up, augmented by biographical information, and statistics for appearances and goals. Due to other preoccupations, that task will take at least two more years, but given that most of this information has never been published previously, it would be sensible to make it available to football historians and statistics, in its “raw”, unfinished, state. Accordingly, it will be published in two stages. Available now is Version 1, containing registration details for all Scottish League clubs from 1893 (when the SFA started to record registrations, on the advent of professionalism in Scotland) up to and including 1945/46. This includes players from the short-lived Third Division in the early 1920’s. In addition, those players who appeared in Scottish Cup ties for League clubs prior to 1893, are also recorded. The information comprises full names, date of signing and clubs involved, in alphabetical order of surname, then sorted in date order. The sorting out of players with common names has been crudely applied, and will only be completed at the end of the further research period, two years hence. There should, however, be sufficient information to point historians in the correct direction, where there are areas of doubt and some confusion. I am particularly pleased to include registration data from the period of the Second World War, which is a fascinating, and much under-researched, era of Scottish football. This also dove-tails with the start of the existing Post-War Record. Even in tiny print, a printed version would amount to almost 700 A4 pages, and so the data will once again be published on CD Rom, using Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Anyone with a computer can access this data, and technical help in that direction is available. In this issue (No.102) of Scottish Football Historian, is an article on William Chalmers, who played for Queen’s Park, Rangers, a number of English clubs, and was briefly a coach of Juventus. To illustrate the contents of the CD Rom, the opposite page is a print out of all the William Chalmers to have played in Scottish football between 1890 and 1946. The cost of version 1 is £10, post free in the UK (£11 post free abroad). Included will be a voucher entitling the buyer to a copy of the full version 2, for a further £10. The final, finished database will cost around £20, in line with its post-war predecessor (if you will pardon the reverse chronology). The final version will contain appearances and goals, where previously published. Unlike the Post-War version, which is complete and comprehensive, I do not intend to research missing appearances ; those clubs who have not benefited from a published statistical history, or, because they were in the second or third divisions, did not appear in the very few football annuals which included Scottish statistics, will not have appearances and goals statistics included. If you wish to purchase a copy of Version 1, simply complete the form below, and send it with your remittance for £10 to the address stated. Copies will be despatched from the end of September. As always, I welcome any additional information which would make the data, in future versions, more accurate, and my thanks go to the handful of correspondents who have done this with the Post-War Version. Speaking of which, there will be no updating version of the Post-War Record CD Rom this year. Version 4 will be published in the Autumn of 2008, and will include all the data for those players who played in Scottish League football in 2006/7 and 2007/8. It will also benefit from the many updates incorporated from the continuing research into post-war players, principally dates of birth, and playing careers before and after their involvement in Scottish League football. It may, or may not, include the long-promised Scottish Junior Cup Final appearances. For those who have not yet purchased a copy, Version 3 remains available at £19.50 (UK postage inclusive), and includes all data from 1946/47 to 2005/6 inclusive - see advert on page four of this supplement.
